STEAM
TURBINE is a rotary machine which converts Heat
Energy of Steam into Mechanical Energy.
WORKING PRINCIPLE – “ When we allow steam to expand through a narrow orifice, the Kinetic Energy of Steam is converted into mechanical rotational energy through Impact or Reaction of steam over the blades of Turbine “
Types of Turbine – The main types are:
1.
Impulse
Turbine:
·
In
this type of turbine, steam is expanded in fixed nozzles.
·
Does
work on the moving blades
·
No
pressure drop over the moving blades
2.
Impulse-Reaction
Turbine:
·
Both
fixed and moving blades act like nozzle.
·
Work
is done by the impulse affect plus a reaction effect due to the expansion of
steam through the moving blades.
Steam Turbines can also be classified according to various other parameters like:
Ø Direction of Steam flow
Ø Number of Cylinders
Ø Method of Governing
Ø Principle of Action of Steam
Ø Heat balance Arrangement
